If you are still looking for a 2012 calendar to customize, I have one here!

I like to keep year-at-a-glance calendar by my computer. And it’s another excuse to display a photo.

This template is a tiff file that you can use in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Add your own photo and print!

I hope you liked yesterday’s free download. If you haven’t already seen it, get it here.

Today, I have a quick tutorial on how to customize those overlays as I did in this layout:

As you can see, I recoloured the herringbone design to brown and off-white. I used a houndstooth design and recoloured it with orange and brown.

I use Photoshop CS5, so my instructions are specific to this program.

If you would like to recolour the black part of a design, you create a new layer (Mac: Command+Shift+N, PC: Control+Shift+N) and use the paint bucket tool (G) to cover the entire layer with your desired colour. Then, change the blending mode to lighten, as seen below.

To recolour the white part of a design, you follow the same steps, except you change the blending mode to darken, as seen below.

That’s it! Easy peasy :)

Freebie: Black & White Overlays

January 5, 2012

It’s here. A digital scrapbooking freebie! Click the image above to download. I am a little obsessed with houndstooth. And herringbone. And checks. They are so “little old man” and “kind gentleman”. I especially love a red and white houndstooth print. So retro cute. So I made this set of overlays that can easily be recoloured. [...]

Groove Music for Kids

January 3, 2012

When I was pregnant with Junior, I was on a major AC/DC kick. I listened to it every chance I got. There was something about their beat that lifted my spirits when I felt nauseous, uncomfortable, and huge. After he was born, he would go to sleep to rock music when we were in the car. [...]

Art Supplies for Messy Kids

January 2, 2012

Painting and crafts are two things that always cure boredom in our house. I recently organized our supplies and realized that I can narrow down our essentials art supplies to the things pictured here. These supplies will offer any child hours of creativity. Or if your child is anything like mine, five minutes tops.   [...]

Changing Focus

April 30, 2011

I’m switching gears at the Mrs. Messy blog. Recently I discovered pictures of my son on another website and it gave me a sick feeling. It’s not that I don’t want to share photos and stories of what he’s doing. It’s just that it is his choice. He’s two years old and can’t make that decision. [...]

Winter. Brrrr…

January 19, 2011

In honour of the cold weather that we have been getting, I am posting this layout that features photos from last winter. There’s that dog. He’s the kind of dog that is always at your heel when you’re outside, but never makes a fuss. He’s such a little gentleman. The boy still likes to eat [...]

We Got Snow. Ridiculous Amounts of Snow.

January 18, 2011

This is my basement door. Obviously we can’t use it today thanks to a little thing called WIND. In the last week we have had temperatures in the range of -20°C to -32°C (-4°F to -25.6°F), about 25 cm of snow (10 inches), and winds up to 63 km/h (39 miles/h). The result? A snow [...]
