Obscure Holidays and Celebrations: April 23rd

by Cammy on April 23, 2009

Today marks the death of William Shakespeare. I bet you didn’t know that. I bet you didn’t care.

And how did I know that, you ask? In grade eight I had a teacher named Miss Hilland. She was my English teacher and she wore the funkiest boots I’ve ever seen. On the first day of school she introduced herself and told us that the easiest way to remember her name was “Caroline went over the hill and…”

And what? I’ve always wanted to know. Had a picnic? Fetched a pail of water? Or was it something sordid? The immature eighth grader in me still wants to know!

Anyway, Miss Hilland also shared a little fun fact with us. Her birthday is the same day as the day that Willie Shakespeare died. Which was interesting because not only did Miss Hilland teach English, she was also taught drama.

This is one of many weird facts that I can’t shake from my brain. I can remember something from more than twenty years ago (gasp!), but for the life of me, I can’t remember where I put my glasses. Seriously, I’ve been without them for over a week.

Miss Hilland, wherever you are, I am thinking of you today and wish you a happy birthday. I hope you are still wearing those funky boots.
