I aspire to have skills like these talented quilters. Seriously. How cute is that monkey? Or how about the quilt with frayed edges? I just want to reach out and squeeze it. And the little bird on a black background? Brilliant!

Ah yes, I would love to be that kind of quilter.

I tried quilting about seven or eight years ago. I was living in my hometown and the community school offered a beginners quilting class. We were supposed to make these adorable little table runners. If I remember correctly, there were little triangles of fabric. Maybe we were to make stars? I don’t know. All I know is that I dropped out.

Yes, I am a Quilting School Dropout. Sing it, Frankie.

What I didn’t like about quilting was the finicky cutting and sewing. It is a dangerous thing for me to carry a rotary cutter in my hand. Cut a straight line? Ha!

And the sewing! My gosh, the sewing! Every seam has to be sewn precisely at 1/4 inch in order for all of them to match up nicely. Have you seen me with a sewing machine? No, I guess you haven’t. I like to drive at full throttle. Yes. My machine is always running full speed ahead. It’s a race and I am going to win.

Straight cutting lines and precise seam allowances are a must to make a beautiful quilt. Right?

Wrong.

Enter Denyse Schmidt. Feast your eyes on the next generation of quilting divas *insert angels singing from the heavens*.

Denyse knows how to bring it! Her colour choices and new takes on old patterns really inspired me to try my hand at quilting. Her book, which I originally borrowed from the library and then purchased, is full of bright, colourful designs that will make you want to run out and buy yards and yards of fabric.

But like most ideas I have, I shoved this to the back of my brain. Maybe someday. Like when I grow some patience.

Well that day came sooner that I anticipated. Thanks to Mommy guilt. We took Jacob camping in June. He had the fuzziest of fuzzy blankets. And that kid seriously loved it. Whenever we would wrap him in it, he would wave his arms in glee. Well guess what his parents did? We had to change his butt outdoors and used it for a change pad. When we picked it off the ground, the blanket was covered in tree sap. Sap really sticks to fuzzy blankets. In case you didn’t know.

So armed with guilt, I decided to step into the quilting arena. AKA, the quilt shop. I literally just wandered around until I found the perfect fabric. I immediately fell in love with the monkey-pirates and built the design around it.

Jacob's Pirate Quilt

I went with strips of fabric so Jake could see the whole design.

Jacob's Pirate Quilt

I backed the quilt with flannel in hopes that Jake would feel just as snuggly under his new quilt as his did under his original blanket.

He hasn’t waved his arms in excitement when we cover him with this blanket. But at least he hasn’t puked on it. That’s got to be a good thing. Right?
