I Love Textures – A Brief How-To

I have been hooked on textures since first seeing the work of Jesh de Rox. The man is a genius. I covet his fine art textures. Yum.

I took the above photo two years ago while geocaching with Mr. Messy. I knew that the colours and pattern would make for a good texture.

Looking for a bit of inspiration last night, I decided to play with this texture and see what I could come up with. I must say, I was pleased with the results.

I started with this:

This is our old and decrepit tractor. I like old and decrepit.

I made a layer mask around the tractor:

I added the texture as a color burn layer and clipped it to the layer mask. I then reduced the opacity to 45%:

And finally, I sharpened the image and ended up with this:

If you would like to play with textures, get out your camera and take photos of your ceiling, walls, outbuildings, the sky…anything will do. Just get in close to catch the details.
