WIP…Actually It’s a QUIP

by Cammy on December 28, 2009

If a WIP is a work in progress, would a quilt in progress be a QUIP? I say yes!

I currently have two QUIPs that I work on during my spare time.

Hah! If only I had spare time. With a toddler, spare time means throwing the kid in his crib, tip-toe running to the basement, and sewing like a mad woman for 45 minutes. Forget laundry and toilets… they’ll have to wait because I’d rather that Jake dig in the toilet while I’m trying to clean it, then play with my scissors while I’m trying to sew. Okay, not really. But you get my drift. My time at the sewing machine is precious.

First up, I am working on a pinwheel quilt.

I have something like 372 squares to make. So this is pretty slow going. It is for a double bed in our spare room. I’d like to be finished by spring because we’re working on that room and it should be ready by then.

And this quilt started out as a practice quilt. I had no intention of making a big project. I began playing around with this about two months ago after buying this template from Quilt in a Day.

I first saw this template on Allison Kimball’s blog. She made it look so easy to make flying geese that I had to try it myself. And this template is easy to use. If you want to make accurate blocks, you need this template.

So I started making flying geese with a few fat quarters and I was having so much fun that I used them all up. Then I laid them out zig zag style and decided that I wanted to finish this off as a 48″x48″ lap quilt. I went back to the quilt shop and bought a few more fat quarters and some extra fabric for the binding and backing.

I am anxious to finish both of these, but nap time doesn’t come around often enough. And it certainly doesn’t last long enough. Forty-five minutes and that kid is running circles around me all over again.
